Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) was formerly known as the Northern Areas or the Federally Administered North Areas (FANA), a sparsely populated high-mountain territory in Pakistan’s north. It is part of the greater Kashmir region, which has been a source of tension between Pakistan and India for decades. It contains the world’s longest glaciers outside of the polar region, as well as the world’s second highest mountain peak (K2) and four other eight-thousanders. It is home to three high mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Karakorum, and the Hindukush.
