Sabaragamuwa

Situated in the south-central part of Sri Lanka, Sabaragamuwa Province is named after the indigenous Sabara people who once lived in this area; it consists of the two districts of Kegalle and Ratnapura. Home to a predominantly Buddhist population, which comprises about 86 per cent of the province’s population, Sabaragamuwa Province also has Hindu, Muslim and Christian minority communities living in it. Famous for its gem industry, the province’s capital of Ratnapura even translates to mean the ‘city of gems’. Some of its natural sites such as waterfalls, parks and forest reserves — Udawalawa National Park and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve — are popular tourist attractions.
