Tamil Nadu has seen the rule of the Cholas, the Cheras, the Pandyas, the Pallavas, the Chalukyas, the Bahamani Sultanate and was amongst the first places to have a British settlement in India along with Portuguese, Dutch and French ‘factories’. The present day state is bound by the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Indian Ocean in the south. Tamil Nadu is divided equally between the flat plains in the east that form the fertile plains of the Kaveri River Delta and the Western Ghats, including the Nilgiri, Anaimalai and Palni hills. A notable part of the fauna of Tamil Nadu is the venomous King Cobra.
