Puducherry

As the biggest Union Territory of India, Puducherry – also called Pondicherry – has a population of 1,247,953. While the territory has a strong Portuguese influence, Pondicherry was colonised by Dutch, Portuguese, British and French colonialists – it is known that during the Anglo-french wars the territory was swapped frequently. As a result, the territory is proudly multicultural and its official languages are English, Hindi and French. Known for the city of Auroville, Puducherry gets a high numbers of tourists interested in the spiritual solace offered in the Matramandir and the famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
