The Satavahanas, the Vakatakas, the Kalachuris, the Chalukayas, the Rashtrakutas and the Yadavas are amongst the plethora of dynasties that have ruled over territories that form the current state of Maharashtra. The Ajanta and Ellora caves encapsulate many periods of the state’s vivid history. The rule of Shivaji saw the emergence of a homogenous Martha identity and nationalism for the first time in the region’s history. Present day Maharashtra was also prominent in the struggle for India’s freedom, what with being the birthplace of the Indian National Congress. Maharashtra is described as a ‘plateau of plateaus’ and is flanked by the Arabian Sea on its western coast and parallel to the sea runs the Sahyadari Range, in the north are the Satpuda ranges and in the centre are the Ajanta and Satmala ranges. The capital of the state – Mumbai – is also the commercial hub of the country and is a major port.
