Chandigarh

Chandigarh, a Union Territory and the first planned city of independent India, holds the unique distinction of being the capital city of two states in India – Punjab and Haryana. A landlocked region, it has rich, fertile alluvial soil and experiences a summer that sees a temperature as high as 50 degrees Celsius and a winter that see a low of two degrees Celsius. Chandigarh also experiences a hot and humid monsoon. The decision to build a new city was made after the partition of India and Pakistan, and the loss of Lahore to Pakistan. This necessitated a new capital for the Indian Punjab, and the decision to build one from scratch was taken after rejecting Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Shimla, Ambala, Phillaur and Karnal as possible options.
