The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a union territory that is composed of two groups of islands, the former of which are the peaks of a submerged mountain range. These are at the southeastern edge of the Bay of Bengal. It is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal on the west, the Andaman Sea on the East and has Myanmar to the north and Indonesia to the south. The indigenous communities have consciously avoided interaction with outsiders, in spite of the islands lying on the route to Myanmar from India. The British had established a penal colony over here and the Japanese had annexed the islands during the Second World War. Post-Independence in 1947, the Indian Government declared the jail that was used to hold Indian political leaders during independence as a national monument in 1979.
