The present day state of Rajasthan is the largest state in the country and has been the home of human settlements since the days of the Harappan Civilisation. It has seen the rule of many dynasties and especially the various kingdoms of Rajput kings from which it derives its medieval name – Rajputana or literally the land of the Rajputs, a warrior-ruling class of people. It is famous around the world for its many forts and palaces. Its capital city Jaipur is also known as the ‘pink city’ for its buildings are mostly rose coloured. The original city was fortified and built according to a combination of astrology and astronomy by Sawai Jai Singh in the 18th century. The state is also known for the vast stretch of the Thar or the Great Indian Desert that covers its topography on the western side. The Aravalli Range of Hills runs from the north-east of the state to the south-west. It shares an international border with Pakistan in the north.
