West Bengal

The state of West Bengal shares a border with Bangladesh in the east, Nepal in the west and Bhutan in the north-east. It has seen powerful sultanates before falling to the British after the famous Battle of Plassey in 1757 and becoming the first stronghold of the British in India. The state has rich fertile soil due to the draining of the Ganga and its tributaries in the south into the Bay of Bengal and is bordered by the sub-Himalayan and Himalayan areas in the north. The delta formed by the tributaries is also home to the Mangrove forests known as the Sunderbans.
