Located in the South Eastern cradle of the Himalayas, the state of Sikkim is of great strategic importance to India. It shares a border with China to the north and north-east, with Bhutan to the south-east and with Nepal to the west. India’s highest peak – Kanchenjunga – is located in Sikkim which is surrounded by mountains on three sides making the state into a sort of basin into which the river Tista and its tributaries flow. Little is known of Sikkim’s history before the medieval period. The Namgyal dynasty ruled Sikkim from 1642 until 1975, when by a special referendum held in Sikkim 97 per cent of the population voted to be a part of India.
