Kerala

Today a famous tourist attraction, the waterways of Kerala have historically witnessed trade with the Romans, Chinese, Syrians, Arabs and mainland Europeans. The first democratically elected communist government anywhere in the world was also a state electoral phenomenon in Kerala. Today, it is the state with some of the highest ratings in key human development indexes, such as literacy rates and life expectancy amongst all sections of its population and low maternal and infant mortality rates. According to the meteorological department, Kerala receives rain 286 days in a year and has a varying topography, what with the hill ranges of the Sahyadris in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west.
