Gujarat

Called the ‘Jewel of the West,’ Gujarat is located on the west coast of India. With 50 per cent of its land covered in greenery, Gujarat’s city Gandhinagar is believed to be the greenest city in Asia. The state is also known for its history: Surat is known to be the first place the British East India company established its presence in 1818. It is also believed to be one of the two centres of the Indus Valley civilisation. However, this state has a controversial history as well: the 2002 riots of Gujarat are etched in the country’s memory, and Gujarat is often associated with communalism.
